Examination Components
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome results from compression of the nerves that exit the neck as a cardiovascular bundle as it goes between the scalene muscles of the neck, the first rib and clavicle, the pectoralis minor muscle and finally into the arm. It can also compress the vascular structures within this bundle as well. This results in symptoms in the pinky and ring finger and into the elbow.
Examination includes a thorough Orthopedic evaluation of the neck with the addition of assessment of neural tension, segmental motion of the thoracic spine, rib dysfunctions, myofascial tension through the neck and shoulders, cervical segmental mobility, and cranial assessment.
